The Butchart Gardens are located a few kilometers north of Victoria (British Columbia, Canada) on the site of an abandoned quarry. We visited the gardens on 2002-06-04.
Thundebird Park contains a First Nations cultural center and totem pole carving studio, and a large number of totem poles. It is in downtown Victoria, adjacent to the Royal British Columbia Museum and the provincial Parliament building. We visited there on 2002-06-05.

The Crystal Gardens building is located in downtown Victoria. Constructed of aluminum, it was home to a giant indoor swimming pool, a parachute training facility (during World War I), and various other uses. Since about 1972 a wonderful tropical garden has been housed there, with a menagerie of appropriate species. One of the pygmy maroset families had newborn babies; we could see them, but they were not located where a picture could be taken. We visited on 2002-06-05.
Craigdarroch Castle is the home of a coal mining baron who rose to high
estate from humble beginnings working in the mines. Even so, he was
``controversial because of his labor relations practices''. He died before
the castle was ready for occupancy, but his wife and family lived there.
Unfortunately the interiors were too dark for available light photography,
and we took only this exterior view. We were there on 2002-06-06.
Located near Butchard Gardens, the Butterfly Garden is home to many butterflies with natural food and decorative plants. All stages of the life cycle can be seen, with educational explanations. We visited on 2002-06-07. Butterflies are hard to photograph because they settle for only a moment, and often move their wings even when landed.
