In 1868 Emperor Meiji renamed Edo to Tokyo and relocated the Imperial Palace there from Kyoto, among other major reforms that brought an end to the Tokugawa shogunate with its isolationist policies.
Built in 1922 to commemorate Emperor Meiji, who died in that year. This is a Shinto shrine.
